On this day in 1689, China's Ching court signed with Russia the Nertchinsk Treaty, the first peace treaty between China and a European country. Nertchinsk is a city in Siberia.

On this day in 1910, Polish chemist Marie Curie announced that she has isolated pure radium.

And on this day in 2000, EVA Airways made its maiden flight from Taipei to Tokyo after 10 years of efforts to get a share of the lucrative air route.
