Taiwan’s foreign ministry says that ties with the allied nation of Guatemala are stable. That’s despite the resignation of the Central American country’s president, Otto Perez, last Thursday over a corruption scandal.
Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister, Simon Ko, said Monday that Taiwan has been monitoring Guatemala’s presidential elections, and that there has been no change in ties.
“Relations between Taiwan and Guatemala, have long been stable and friendly," said Ko.
"Of course we’ve been closely watching the changes in Guatemala’s domestic politics," he said. "But as far as we’re concerned, the most important thing is to maintain good ties.”
Guatemala has already sworn in Vice President Alejandro Maldonado as the nation’s new president. He will serve out the end of Perez’s term, which concludes in January.
A source close to Maldonado says that he is seen as a pro-Taiwan politician.
