The Ministry of Health and Welfare says that AIDS patients will soon be eligible for organ transplants. AIDS patients cannot receive organ transplants under current laws, but regulations are changing with new developments in AIDS treatment.
Health official Wang Tsung-Hsi said that in the past, AIDS patients were not allowed to be on waiting lists for organ donations due to limited supply. The health ministry is now working to change existing rules with the encouragement of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center.
Health authorities are also planning to change laws to allow AIDS patients to donate organs to other AIDS patients.
