The foreign ministry says that ongoing presidential elections in Guatemala will not affect the country’s relationship with Taiwan.
Guatemala will be holding a second round of voting on October 25. The move comes after none of the candidates managed to secure more than 50% of votes during the initial round of voting on Sunday.
An official with the foreign ministry’s department in charge of Latin American affairs said Thursday that Taiwan has maintained good relations with the candidates.
The official said that candidate Jimmy Morales, the leader in the first round of voting has visited Taiwan’s embassy in Guatemala. According to the official, the elections will not affect Taiwan’s relations with Guatemala.
Guatemala’s latest presidential elections come after former president Otto Perez stepped down amid accusations of corruption. His vice president, Alejandro Maldonado, will govern the country as interim leader until a new president is sworn in in January.
