The defense ministry says that it is aware of Chinese live-fire military drills that will begin on Friday. That will also be the last day of Taiwan’s most important annual war games—the Han Kuang series of military exercises.
Defense ministry spokesman David Lo said on Thursday that the Chinese live-fire military drills are not a cause for concern.
"The defense ministry is fully aware of China’s planned live-fire drills, so the public should not worry," Lo said. "This is China’s annual military training, and the drills are not targeting Taiwan, so I think the public should not be concerned."
China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, even though the two sides have been ruled separately for more than 60 years. Beijing has also threatened to bring Taiwan under its control, by force if necessary.
According to a notice on the website of China’s Maritime Safety Administration, the upcoming military exercises will be held from Friday to Sunday. It is also warning ships not to enter the area designated for the drill.
