Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military exercises are now in their fourth day.
President Ma Ying-jeou and high-ranking officials traveled to Hsinchu County in northern Taiwan to inspect artillery exercises designed to counter an amphibious landing. The president discussed the effects of government policy on national security.
"Ever since I began my term, I’ve been upholding the principle of no unification, no independence, and no use of military force under the country’s constitutional framework. I’ve been pushing forward peaceful cross-strait development based on the 1992 Consensus and the principle of One China, different interpretations," Ma said.
"Four years ago, we started to further consolidate three areas of national security: cross-strait ties, international relations, and national defense. Today, we can see wonderful results."
Soldiers conducted five different exercises focusing on potential routes for an amphibious invasion. The president said the simulations have been a great success, and recognized the efforts put forth by Taiwan’s men and women in uniform.
