Average age of Taiwanese first-time mother is 30.5 years
The future of Taiwan

The average age of first-time mothers in Taiwan is 30.5 years old. That’s up from 27.4 years old a decade ago. That was the word from the interior ministry on Wednesday. The average age of first-time mothers has gradually been rising in recent years as many people choose to marry and have children later in life.

The interior ministry said that over 136,000 babies were born from January to August this year. That’s an increase of 4,000 over last year. The number of newlywed couples has also reached 98,000 this year, 2,000 more than last year.

Taiwan saw its lowest birthrate in 2010 when only 155,000 babies were born. Since then it has gone up to over 200,000 every year.

The government has been working to encourage people in Taiwan to marry and have babies through slogans, family-friendly policies and monetary incentives as Taiwan’s population continues to age.
