Taiwan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) estimates that 18.8 million people will be eligible to vote in January’s presidential election. Of these, 1.29 million will be first-time voters.
CEC Chairman Liu I-Chou said Wednesday that the commission estimates that this election will see 730,000 more votes than the last presidential election. Figures for first-time voter participation are also expected to be higher than those for the last presidential election.
“The figure the Department of Household Registration gave us includes those who will be over 20 by next January 16th," said Liu. "These are the people who are eligible to vote for the first time, and their number is about 1.29 million.”
Liu also said there are an average 6000 registered voters overseas each election, but usually, only around 5000 come back to Taiwan to vote. Taiwan does not issue absentee ballots.
The next presidential election will be on January 16 with voting hours from 8 am to 4 pm.
