Gov’t agencies meet to discuss action against protestors
Anti-nuclear power protestors

The Cabinet called a meeting of government agencies Wednesday to discuss action against anti-nuclear protestors found to have broken the law. Representatives from the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Justice, and the Taipei City Government were among those present at the meeting.

On Tuesday, protestors opposed to the construction of the controversial fourth nuclear power plant surrounded the legislature, preventing legislators form leaving the building. They also surrounded the car of legislator Lu Chia-chen and blocked rush-hour traffic on a Taipei road.

Speaking Wednesday, deputy interior minister Chen Chwen-jing said that government agencies are discussing how to enforce the law during future protests.

"We must deal with leaders [of protests], repeat offenders, and radicals in accordance with the law," said Chen. "The Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency are working together to determine how to deal with them under existing statutes. Of course, we must deal with them within the boundaries of the law."

Chen also said that the National Police Agency may put repeat offenders and violent protestors into preventative custody.
