The dengue fever outbreak that has continued to ravage southern Taiwan is likely to reach a peak in late October before subsiding. That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The CDC said on Thursday that the total number of cases could reach 30,000 to 37,000 by then, depending on how effective disease control efforts are.
As of Wednesday, 11,006 cases of dengue fever have been reported. Of these, 9,634 cases are in Tainan. 25 people have died from the mosquito-borne disease since May.
Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease with symptoms that include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash. In a small number of cases, the disease can develop into hemorrhagic dengue fever, which can be fatal.
