The foreign ministry says it is monitoring the situation in Burkina Faso after the country’s presidential guard abruptly dissolved the government on Thursday. Burkina Faso is one of Taiwan’s three diplomatic allies in Africa.

According to an AFP report, forces still loyal to the Burkina Faso’s former president Blaise Compaore have detained the country’s interim leaders, President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isac Zida.

The foreign ministry has expressed Taiwan’s hope that the situation will come to a swift and peaceful conclusion. According to the foreign ministry, Taiwan’s embassy staff, technical assistance groups and medical aid groups are all safe. The ministry is urging Taiwanese in Burkina Faso to exercise greater caution.
