The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that a media report announcing a strike by Tainan healthcare workers is untrue.
According to the report, medical workers in Tainan have been unhappy about understaffing as they work to combat an outbreak of dengue fever centered on the city.
On Friday, deputy head of the CDC Chuang Jen-hsiang said that Tainan has an adequate number of healthcare professionals to deal with the outbreak.
"There really isn’t a lack of manpower at the moment," Chuang said. "It looks like the media report is based on an anonymous source. No medical workers have brought up an issue [with manpower]."
87% of dengue fever cases reported so far in this year’s outbreak have come from Tainan. Tainan registered an additional 523 cases on Thursday.
But Chuang said based on the current data, Tainan’s situation has stabilized. He said it will take several days to see if the outbreak has subsided. However, the outbreak is not over, with a growing number of cases reported in neighboring Kaohsiung.
