An Indonesian fisherman working on a Taiwanese fishing vessel has been confirmed dead. That’s after the boat capsized off the coast of Taoyuan in northern Taiwan following a collision with a cargo ship on Friday.
According to Coast Guard officers on Saturday, the body was discovered about 4.9 nautical miles from the location of the collision. The victim was confirmed to be one of the Indonesian fishermen working on board. His body was brought to the neighboring Tamshui Harbor for identification.
Eight other people are still unaccounted for, and the search and rescue efforts continued on Saturday. The missing people are one Taiwanese captain and four Chinese and three Indonesian migrant workers.
The collision occurred at around 1:48 am Friday when the 48-ton fishing vessel, the Shih Hui No. 31, collided with the cargo ship Asia Cement No. 2. Investigation into the cause of the collision is still underway.
