Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it hopes Japan will continue to contribute to peace and stability of the world.
The foreign ministry made the comments Saturday after Japan’s parliament approved controversial legislation that enhances the role of the Japanese military. The new law passed overnight allows Japanese troops to fight abroad for the first time since World War II. Critics of the bill said it violated Japan’s pacifist constitution, and puts the country at risk of being involved in US-led wars.
In response to the passage of the legislation, Taiwan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Eleanor Wang said the legislation aims to strengthen Japan’s alliance with the United States. She also said that the US-Japan alliance is the cornerstone of regional peace. Wang said Taiwan hopes Japan will continue to contribute to world peace and stability.
