China’s issuance of ID cards hurts feelings of the Taiwanese: Premier
Addressing ID card concerns

China’s issuance of ID cards for Taiwanese citizens visiting the mainland has hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people. That’s the word from Premier Mao Chi-kuo on Monday.

The cards, modeled after the ID cards used for residents of Hong Kong and Macau, went into effect on Monday. Some say the cards are aimed at downgrading Taiwan’s status as an independent sovereignty.

Mao spoke about the new cards at the legislature on Monday.

“There was not enough communication with us before China [decided to change] the ‘Taiwan Compatriot Permit," said Mao.

"We are extremely dissatisfied with its handling of the matter," he said. "China’s handling of other similar matters has, in fact, [deeply] hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people. We must express the seriousness of the issue to [China].

Meanwhile, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Deputy Minister Lin Chu-chia said that while China says the ID cards are the same as the passport-like permits issued in the past, there are concerns over identity theft.
