US National Security Advisor Susan Rice said on Monday that the US opposes China or Taiwan unilaterally changing the cross-strait status quo. Rice made the comments at George Washington University when speaking about the Taiwan issue ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the US this week.
Rice said that the US cross-strait policy has not changed. It is committed to the US-China Three Communiques, the Taiwan Relations Act and the one China policy. Rice said it was in the US interests for the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to maintain the status quo and peaceful stable relations.
President Xi Jinping arrives in the US on Tuesday and will meet with US President Obama on Friday. Rice said Obama and Xi would discuss issues including Taiwan, human rights, cybersecurity and the South China Sea.
