Two high-ranking US officials have reiterated the United States government’s support for maintaining the status quo in cross-strait relations.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Daniel Kritenbrink, the White House’s chief advisor on Asia policy, and Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel outlined the US position on cross-strait relations. The briefing comes just prior to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to Washington.

Kritenbrink told reporters that the US will not interfere in cross-strait or Taiwan-related issues. He said that the US will continue to follow a “One China” policy and that cross-strait stability is in the United States’ best interests.

Meanwhile, Russel said that Taiwanese people’s democratic rights must be respected. He said the US will ask Beijing to exercise restraint to build cross-strait trust and stability.
