Foreign minister: US has informed Taiwan of Obama-Xi Summit

Foreign minister David Lin says that the US has told Taiwan about the issues US President Barack Obama will discuss with Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi’s visit to the US this week.

On Wednesday, Lin spoke to lawmakers about what Taiwan knows concerning the upcoming meeting.

"We know about the topics [that will be discussed], and of course we know they will talk about Taiwan. The US stance is very clear," said Lin. "They will not harm our interests. We understand the situation."

Lin also explained that the US supports Taiwan’s plans to renovate a runway at an airport on Taiping Island in a disputed area of the South China Sea.

"I think that the US fully affirms our actions, including the president’s South China Sea Peace Initiative. The US expressed its support right away," said Lin. "I think the US knows we are playing a peaceful and cooperative role. The US is clear about this."
