Typhoon Dujuan could move closer to Taiwan than previously predicted and might pass the waters north of Taiwan or skirt its northeastern tip.

According to the Central Weather Bureau on Saturday, as of 8am, Dujuan was centered 960 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan. It was moving at a speed of 14 kph in a northwesterly direction.

The bureau’s data showed that with a radius of 200 kilometers, the storm’s maximum sustained winds were estimated at 126 kph, with gusts of up to 162 kph.

The bureau warned that chances of rain could increase Saturday in northern and eastern Taiwan as Dujuan comes closer. Those in southern Taiwan and mountainous areas in central Taiwan could see thunderstorms in the afternoon.

A sea warning is likely to be issued on the Mid-Autumn Festival on Sunday. But forecasters said that it remains uncertain if a land warning will be issued.

The bureau also warned people to avoid water activities in coastal areas during the holiday weekend as there could be high tides on the coastline.
