The ruling KMT’s presidential candidate, Hung Hsiu-chu, says she is trailing the opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s Tsai Ing-wen by 7% in a recent opinion poll. Hung was speaking on Sunday at a gathering attended by nearly 100 overseas Taiwanese businesspeople who have pledged to back her.
Hung said she has always had confidence in next January’s presidential elections, and that a poll conducted by her campaign office shows that she is trailing Tsai by only 7%.
Rumor has it that several grass-roots KMT heavyweights are planning to replace her by establishing a new political party. When asked to comment on the rumor, Hung simply shrugged off the suggestion by saying that “voters will make the right choice if [her] campaign platform is clearly conveyed.”
Also on Sunday, the DPP’s Tsai Ing-wen said “there is a discrepancy” between the poll conducted by the KMT candidate and surveys by the DPP.
