The economics ministry is preparing to send a market research group to Indonesia on Tuesday for a five-day trip. The ministry said Monday that the group is made up of 25 members from the electronics, textiles, auto parts, food processing, and e-commerce industries.

The ministry said the purpose of the trip to Jakarta and Surabaya is to help Taiwanese businesses diversify their risks in investment and expand into emerging markets. According to the ministry, most Taiwanese businesses overseas locate in Asia, especially China, but as policies changes and operational costs rise in China, some businesses are seeking new locations for manufacturing.

The economics ministry says that with the ASEAN Economic Community expected to form at the end of the year, Southeast Asia has good potential for trade and investment.

The economics ministry also said that Indonesia has a huge domestic market, abundant natural resources, and is gradually taking over China’s role as the world’s factory. The trip will help Taiwanese businesses better understand the Southeast Asia’s domestic markets and the region’s investment environment.
