Taiwan’s dengue fever epidemic center said the week following Typhoon Dujuan will be a key time to prevent spread of the epidemic. It called on the pubic to clean up any areas that may breed mosquitoes.

There were 534 new cases of dengue fever reported on Monday as well as 6 new suspected deaths caused by the disease. Since this summer, there have been 17,959 cases and 42 deaths due to the epidemic.

The new cases were mostly in the south with 441 in Tainan, 84 in Kaohsiung, 5 in Pingtung. Nearly 99% percent of all the cases have been in these southern countries. In other parts of the island, there were 3 new cases in Taipei, and 1 each in Keelung and Changhua.

The center also advises the public to be aware of dengue fever symptoms such as fever, headache, and aching eyes, muscles and joints. Persons with such symptoms should see a doctor.
