Paraguay praises Taiwan for easing cross-strait tensions
Praises Taiwan

Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes has praised Taiwan for its efforts to ease cross-strait tensions. Cartes was speaking at the annual United Nations General Assembly that kicked off on September 28th.

Paraguay is the first ally that spoke in favor of Taiwan at this year’s assembly.

Cartes welcomed Taiwan’s efforts to ensure peace and stability in East Asia. He said the warming ties across the Taiwan Strait have already won recognition from the international community. Cartes also urged Taipei and Beijing to continue exchanges and dialogues.

Taiwan has long focused on its “meaningful” participation in the organizations under the UN framework and has continued to seek support from its allies.

Over the past two years, 16 heads of state voiced their support for Taiwan in both 2013 and 2014.

The general assembly will last through October 6th.
