406 new cases of dengue fever reported Tuesday
Post-typhoon clean up

The Central Epidemic Command Center for Dengue Fever says that Taiwan registered 406 new cases of dengue fever Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, the total number of cases reported since the beginning of summer had reached 18,365. Almost all of the reports of new cases came from Tainan and Kaohsiung at the center of the epidemic

Though more than 80% of patients with dengue fever have recovered, 56 have died. The death toll includes 14 patients who died last week. Most victims so far have been elderly people aged 60-70 years old, but they include one 37 year old man who died of the mosquito-borne illness in mid-September.

The command center is calling for people around Taiwan to clean up standing water left behind by Monday’s typhoon to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquito larvae.
