Dengue fever outbreak slowing down in Tainan

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says Friday that there are signs that the dengue fever outbreak in Tainan is slowing down.

Tainan reported an additional 428 cases on Thursday. However, that is a drop of 281from the number of cases reported on Thursday the week before.

The CDC is optimistic about the prospects of the outbreak slowing down. CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang explained.

"The average number of confirmed cases in Tainan City has been dropping for the last 8 days. That is why the director-general said [on Thursday] that he is 90% confident that there will be a slowing down of the outbreak in Tainan city," Chuang said.

However, Chuang said that the CDC will have to observe for the next two weeks to see whether the outbreak is being contained. It is still unclear what effect the downpours brought by Typhoon Dujuan will have on the spread of the mosquito-borne illness.

While the outbreak in Tainan shows signs of slowing, the outbreak in neighboring Kaohsiung is continuing. The southern port city reported 95 new cases on Thursday, indicating that the outbreak may be worsening there.
