A record number of Chinese tourists is set to arrive in Taiwan during the week-long Chinese national day vacation, which began on October 1. That was the word on Sunday in a report published by the Taipei-based China Times.
The report said that more than 90,000 tourists were likely to visit during the week. That’s a sizeable increase over last year’s number of nearly 80,000 arrivals.
A record single-day high of 16,171 independent tourist arrivals from China was seen on October 1. That beat the previous record by more than 2,000. The China Times reported that in addition to independent tourists, another 8,587 Chinese travelers came to Taiwan on the same day as part of tour groups.
The Tourism Bureau estimates that the growing number of tourists could help generate NT$500 million (US$15.17 million) in revenue during the week-long holiday. The bureau said that each Chinese tourist spends an average of US$242 per day. That’s second only to Japanese visitors. The bureau said that hotels, travel agencies, specialty product shops, and airlines are set to benefit most.
