Taiwan has seen 20,530 confirmed cases of dengue fever so far during this year’s outbreak. That’s according to the latest statistics released Monday by the Central Epidemic Command Center for Dengue Fever.
The southern city of Tainan remains at the center of the outbreak with 17,497 cases reported, including 219 new cases added to the list on Sunday.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy-Director Chuang Jen-hsiang said on Monday that 84.5% of those who have contracted hemorrhagic fever have recovered. He said, though, that 61 people are still in intensive care.
Chuang said while the number of new cases reported in Tainan has dropped over the past week, there has been a slight increase in the number of cases in Kaohsiung.
He said the mosquito-borne disease has claimed the lives of 56 people, including one new suspected death reported on Sunday.
