Optimistic about US arms sales to Taiwan: Deputy Defense Minister
Optimistic

The government is optimistic about US arms sales to Taiwan. That’s the word from Deputy Defense Minister Liu Chen-wu on Monday, US Time.

Liu is leading a delegation to attend the 2015 US-Taiwan Defense Industry Conference in Virginia.

Speaking at the conference, Liu said because of “asymmetric warfare” between Taiwan and China, the island must upgrade its defense capabilities.

In the face of China’s growing military strength, Liu urged the United States to supply Taiwan with advanced fighter aircraft and submarines. It is not enough for Taiwan to rely on its current airport facilities and warplanes. A new and powerful generation of jet fighters is needed.

It was reported that the Obama administration has already started discussing arms sales to Taiwan. It may notify Taiwan of its decision between mid-December and Taiwan’s presidential elections on January 16th.
