Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Shen Lyu-shun, held a national day reception in Washington DC on Wednesday. The national day of the Republic of China, which is Taiwan’s official name, falls on October 10.
Shen said that Taiwan is the United States’ 10th largest trading partner. He said both countries share democratic values and respect human rights.
Chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), Raymond Burghardt was in attendance at the event. The AIT is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan in the absence of formal ties.
Burghardt said that Taiwan and the US are partners in Asia and in the wider world. He said that they share the same values, including a fair economic system, freedom of the press, and environmental protection. He said that democracy is thriving in Taiwan and that Taiwan is a beacon to all Asian governments.
