President Ma Ying-jeou says that the preservation of Taiwan’s status quo is the key to cross-strait peace and improved cross-strait relations.
Ma was speaking Thursday at the opening ceremony of a forum on world peace.
During his remarks, Ma said that currently policies against cross-strait unification, Taiwan independence, and avoiding military conflict are important principles needed to improve cross-strait relations. Ma also said that the “1992 Consensus” is a second cornerstone of the cross-strait relationship. Under the consensus, the two sides agree that there is only “one China”, with each having its own interpretation of what “one China” means.
During the ceremony, Ma also reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to peace in the East and South China Seas. He said that Taiwan will work to resolve disputes in the two seas through peaceful means.
