DPP presidential candidate to attend National Day ceremony
DPP's Tsai in Japan

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen will attend the National Day ceremony on Saturday. The party’s spokesman, Ruan Jhao-syong, said Friday that Tsai will lead a delegation of 23 high-ranking party members.

Tsai is currently visiting Japan, but Ruan said that she has changed her plans so that she can come back in time for the National Day ceremony. The hope is that her actions can help warm relations between Taiwan’s political parties.

“Chairwoman Tsai thinks Taiwan needs solidarity, which won’t just fall down from the sky," said Ruan.

"She believes that we need to be the ones to start pushing for that," he said. "There will be disputes and challenges, but as long as we confidently head toward the same goal, the public will recognize our efforts. She would also like to put an end to political confrontation. [She believes] that solidarity requires reconciliation, and reconciliation begins with acceptance. The hope is that a united society will make Taiwan a better place, and pave the way for necessary reforms.”
