Kaohsiung sees record one-day increase in Dengue fever cases
Sweeping away dengue fever

The southern city of Kaoshiung has seen a record one-day increase in new dengue fever cases. Up until now the focus has been largely on the neighboring city of Tainan, which has seen the vast majority of Taiwan’s dengue fever cases since May.

To date, there have been a total of 22,847 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Taiwan. A total of 89 people are confirmed to have died of the disease, while another 32 deaths have yet to be officially linked to dengue fever.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said on Sunday that the number of new cases in Tainan is continuing to drop. The number of new cases in Kaohsiung, on the other hand, has continued to rise. That city posted a record high number of new cases on both Friday and Saturday, the first two days of the three-day National Day weekend. There were 134 new cases in Kaohsiung on Friday, and 142 new cases on Saturday.

The CDC says that so far, about 87.6 percent of those infected have recovered from the disease.
