The ruling KMT has decided to hold an extraordinary party meeting on Saturday. There has been speculation that the party may use the occasion to discuss the possibility of replacing its presidential candidate. The current candidate, Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu, is trailing considerably behind the opposition Democratic Progressive Party’s Tsai Ing-wen in the polls.
Hung’s likely replacement would be KMT Chairman Eric Chu, who is also the current mayor of New Taipei City.
In response to speculation about her replacement, Hung said that she will accept the party’s final decision, but she said that the focus of the national congress should not be on whether to replace her.
