President Ma Ying-jeou says that Taiwan’s solar cell production is the second highest in the world. Ma was speaking Wednesday at the opening ceremony of a solar and green energy exhibition in Taipei.
Ma said that the government is focusing on renewable energy, aiming to have 1000 land and sea wind turbines and a million roofs with solar panels. According to Ma, Taiwan’s solar photovoltaic power generation has increased by 6.8 million megawatts from 2007 through July 2015. During his remarks, Ma said that the value of the Taiwanese solar power production has seen a significant increase.
"Our solar cell [production] is second in the world. In 2007, the year before I came to office, the value of the solar power industry’s production was NT$53.5 billion," said Ma. "By last year it had grown 2.5 times to NT$184 billion."
Ma said that the government is working hard to develop renewable energy. But he said that as these sources depend on the weather, they also need to used alongside with conventional energy sources.
