Tsai announces new policies on food safety
Tsai Ing-wen

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s presidential candidate, Tsai Ing-wen, has announced five new food safety policies. On Thursday, Tsai said that the government should be more proactive in dealing with food safety concerns.

“A good government has the responsibility and the obligation to help renew the citizens trust in food safety," said Tsai, "this is the DPP’s goal and also my promise to you.”

One of her policies is to prevent tainted substances from entering the food manufacturing process.

Tsai also wants to simplify the food certification process so that Taiwan’s standards match those used in the international community.

Another of her policies is to increase the scope of the nation’s food inspections, to cover ten times more products.

Tsai says she would amend the food safety law to increase fines and mete out more severe punishment for those who break the law. She also called for awards and protection for whistleblowers.
