Mainland Affairs Council Minister Andrew Hsia says that the 1992 Consensus remains the foundation of the cross-strait relationship.

The 1992 Consensus refers to a verbal agreement reached in 1992 between representatives of Taiwan and Mainland China. Under the 1992 Consensus, both sides agree that both Taiwan and the Mainland are a part of “One China”. However, the agreement allows both sides to interpret what “One China” means in their own way.

Speaking at the legislature on Friday, Hsia said that Taipei’s understanding of “One China” continues to be the Republic of China. Hsia said that the Taiwanese side has expressed this viewpoint to the Mainland side on multiple occasions, and that the Republic of China remains the core of the government’s interpretation of “One China”.
