The ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) new presidential candidate – party Chairman Eric Chu – held a campaign meeting on Sunday evening. That was one day after the party chose him to replace the original candidate, Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu.
Chu is likely to begin campaign activities on Monday at the earliest.
A local newspaper – the United Daily News evening edition – reported on Sunday’s campaign meeting. It said that the goal of the meeting was to assess the campaign resources at Chu’s disposal, and to staff his campaign.
Unconfirmed reports say that KMT Secretary-General Lee Shih-chuan is likely to serve as campaign director, while Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng will run Chu’s campaign headquarters.
Lee said that while the KMT has switched candidates, that does not mean it’s starting from scratch. He said that the party has been working on the elections for the last three months, and has made policy, organizational and schedule-related suggestions. But he said that Hung’s campaign was media and internet-heavy, while Chu’s campaign would do a better job of balancing that with campaign stops and interaction with local officials and supporters.
