The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, Tsai Ing-wen opened her campaign headquarters on Sunday. Some five thousand supporters turned out for the event, which included a farmers market and craft fair, as well as a shop selling campaign-related items.
Tsai’s campaign staff also arranged for a micro-donor campaign involving little piggy banks which they had passed out to supporters. Staff on Sunday began welcoming the “little piggies” back home, now filled with money which will be used in the campaign.
With just 90 days remaining before the elections in mid-January, Tsai is holding a secure lead ahead of the ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) new candidate. That party chose on Saturday to replace its original candidate – Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu – with the party’s chairman Eric Chu.
