The International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM), or museum studies, is set to hold a symposium in Taipei starting on Tuesday.
More than 100 museologists from Asia, Europe and the United States will gather in Taipei for the two-day event.
The head of the Taipei-based Museum of World Religions, Chen Kuo-ning, spoke on Monday about the purpose of the symposium.
“In the spirit of multiculturalism, our museum would like to call on the public to respect our traditional cultures," said Chen, "at the same time we will conduct exchanges with other museums in the international community, so as to promote further development in the Asia Pacific region. That’s the goal of this symposium.”
Chen said she hopes that museums in the region can share their experiences. She said that globalization has made it difficult for less-developed countries to protect their unique cultural traditions.
Chen said Taiwan has seen major growth in the development of museums over the past decade, in terms of variety, multiculturalism and professionalism.
