President Ma Ying-jeou says Taiwan is continuing to upgrade and transform its industries in order to boost exports. He made the remarks on Monday in Taipei, ahead of a speech by visiting Economics Nobel Laureate Jean Tirole.
Ma said Taiwan’s economic growth rate was 3.78% last year, outperforming Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea. He said the local unemployment rate has also dropped to the lowest point in 15 years.
President Ma said that the government is also working to help companies attract the best manpower.
"We also want to help industries get the best talent in the world by relaxing our immigration laws to introduce more people, more talent from abroad," said Ma.
President Ma also reiterated Taiwan’s hopes of joining the second round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks and becoming part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
