KMT presidential candidate Eric Chu has criticized DDP candidate Tsai Ing-wen on her stance on cross-strait relations. His words came Monday in an interview.
Chu was referring to remarks by Tsai on Sunday at the founding of her campaign headquarters. Tsai reiterated her cross-strait policy as “maintaining the status quo”. She added that “the DPP is not equivalent to Taiwan, nor is the KMT equivalent to the Republic of China.”
Chu rejected Tsai’s comments as “merely wordplay”.
“I could just as easily say that Eric Chu is not equivalent to the KMT, nor is Tsai equivalent to the DPP," said Chu, "the important thing is that the KMT loves Taiwan and will defend the ROC’s interests; whereas the DPP could possibly hurt Taiwan, because it could make changes to or even hurt ‘The Republic of China’. So I believe that this is an issue that we need to debate. “Maintaining the status quo” is not just a four word phrase, it must be based on something concrete.”
Meanwhile, a number of New Taipei city councilors from the DPP protested at the city government building on Monday. They were speaking out against Chu’s decision to keep his post as New Taipei mayor while campaigning for president. Chu called the protest a political move and an example of negative campaigning on the part of the DPP.
