Taiwan is hosting its first global museum conference. The annual conference of the International Council of Museums Committee for Museum and Collections of Natural History (NATHIST) is being held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Taipei.

Established in 1984, the council is influential in natural and historical artifact preservation. Currently, only Taiwan’s National Museum of Natural Science and National Taiwan Museum take part as its committee members.

The conference’s theme this year is “Natural History Museums: Building Our Future”. It will address the museum’s future outlook, including inter-museum collaboration, raising public participation, and artifact collection. Curators and experts from more than ten countries are participating in the conference.

Deputy Minister of Culture Joseph Chen said there is an increasing amount of foreign participation in Taiwan’s museum conferences. This is a sign that Taiwan’s museums are getting attention in the international community.

Taiwan passed the first museum law this year, paving the way for its museums to connect with the international community.
