KMT Chairman Eric Chu says he will resign as party chairman if he loses the presidential elections. Chu is the KMT’s new presidential candidate and was speaking Tuesday during a radio interview.
Taiwan is scheduled to hold legislative and presidential elections on January 16th.
Chu has been under fire for recently replacing Legislature Vice President Hung Hsiu-chu to become the party’s presidential candidate. People also have been criticizing him for keeping his position as mayor of New Taipei City while running for president.
Chu called the criticisms his biggest setback since entering politics as they are like “10,000 arrows piercing his heart.”
The KMT Chairman is still lagging far behind the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen in opinion polls.
Chu said his entering the race allows the public to have another option as an opposition-led government could “bring changes to the Republic of China.” Chu was referring to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
