Foreign Minister David Lin says that Taiwan’s relations with its allies will remain stable at least through the beginning of next year.
Lin was addressing the legislature’s foreign affairs committee on Wednesday.
Foreign media outlets have reported that China may seek to coopt more of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies after Taiwan holds presidential elections in January. Opposition lawmaker Huang Wei-cher asked Lin about the future of Taiwan’s relationship with its Central and South American allies.
Lin responded that while it is impossible to predict how foreign relations will play out in the second half of 2016, the first half of the year will not bring any changes.
Lin said that maintaining stability in cross-strait relations will be a key to ensuring that Taiwan’s foreign relations remain as normal.
