US will offer appropriate reception to Chu if he visits
US will assist

Foreign Minister David Lin says that the United States will offer assistance to the ruling Kuomintang’s (KMT) presidential candidate, Eric Chu, if he decides to visit.

Reports say that Chu is planning to make a trip in early-to-mid November. His rival, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen made a similar trip back in early June. During her visit, she became the first presidential candidate from Taiwan to step foot into the US State Department building.

When asked whether Chu would receive a similar reception to Tsai, the foreign minister said that the question should be directed toward Chu. That’s because, he said, the foreign ministry is not involved in making any of the arrangements. Lin said that the ministry only provides administrative assistance for that type of trip.

Lin went on to say that the KMT had not yet contacted the foreign ministry to ask for assistance.

When asked what the United States thought about Chu’s recent decision to enter the race, Lin said that US officials don’t take a stance when it comes to Taiwan’s elections.
