Foreign Minister David Lin said on Friday that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s current trip to the United Kingdom will not affect Taiwan’s relations with the UK.
China recently signed a business agreement with the UK that’s worth 400 billion British pounds (US$62 billion). Lin said Xi’s UK visit is mainly for trade development and will not change the mutually beneficial relationship between Taiwan and the UK.
Lin said that back in 2009, the UK granted visa-free entry to Taiwanese visitors. Ireland and other EU countries followed suit, granting the same treatment to Taiwan.
Lin said that trade between Taiwan and the UK is continuing to grow. Other positive developments include the signing of a working holiday agreement, which he said was a sign of enhanced exchanges between the two countries.
