Taiwan’s Special Forces will be featured in a Discovery Channel program next Monday. The program, called Taiwan’s Military Elite 2, will have its Asian premiere on October 26. It will showcase for the first time the country’s Marine Corps special force, which is a counter terrorism response unit.
President Ma Ying-jeou spoke on Friday about the responsibilities of the elite force.
“The Special Forces’ responsibility is military defense, offering security for important figures, and counter terrorism response. In times of war, they play a critical role in asymmetric operations,” said Ma.
Ma also spoke about the Special Forces’ capabilities. He said the Army Aviation Special Forces won second and fourth place in a seven-week jungle combat competition in Central America seven years ago. Ma also said that in 2010, Taiwan competed in an international sniping contest as the only Asian team among the 38 teams, and won second place in the eight kilometer running category.
President Ma said these results show Taiwan’s prowess in Special Forces training.
