Tsai says DPP willing to work with KMT if she is elected
A DPP campaign rally

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman and  presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen says the DPP is willing to work with the KMT and the legislature if she is elected.

Tsai was speaking Saturday at a by-election campaign rally for the party’s candidate for Taoyuan City councilor.

Taiwan is scheduled to hold its presidential elections on January 16th. A recent opinion poll shows Tsai is still leading with nearly 39% of the vote, followed by ruling KMT’s Eric Chu at nearly 22%.

Tsai said there is no need to worry about one-party rule as Taiwan has a system of checks and balances. Tsai also said her party will discuss policies with the KMT and the legislature in a rational manner.

Also on Saturday, KMT Chairman and presidential candidate Eric Chu said he was lagging far behind Tsai because he just started his presidential campaign. Chu also said many KMT supporters have yet to forgive the party for replacing the previously-nominated presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu with him last Saturday.
