Dengue fever outbreak eases in Taiwan

The dengue fever outbreak in Taiwan has eased as there were fewer cases reported Friday compared with a week ago. That’s according to the latest statistics released Saturday morning by the Central Epidemic Command Center for Dengue Fever.

On Friday, there were 261 new confirmed cases. In the southern city of Kaohsiung, 150 new cases were reported, down 23 from last Friday. The number of new cases in Tainan, the center of the outbreak, also dropped considerably as the figure stood at 102, down 81 from last Friday.

To date, there have been a total of 26,921 confirmed dengue fever cases in Taiwan since the beginning of summer. Over 21,000 of them are in Tainan. Kaohsiung came second with 5,407, followed by Pintung with 120 cases.

The mosquito-born disease has claimed the lives of 122 people, including two suspected deaths reported Friday.
