“92 Consensus” doesn’t put Taiwan at a disadvantage: Ma
President Ma

President Ma Ying-jeou says the “92 Consensus” does not put Taiwan at a disadvantage. He was speaking during a local TV interview, which aired on Monday.

The “92 Consensus” refers to a tacit agreement reached between Taiwan and China in 1992. Under the agreement, both sides agree that there is only one China, though each side may have its own interpretation of what that means.

Ma said the initiative was proposed by Taiwan on the basis of the constitution. He said it is not outdated. As matter of fact, Ma said, it offers potential for future cross-strait exchanges.

“The ‘92 Consensus’ allows Taiwan room to maneuver, rather than strangling it. For the mainland, it also has the ‘one China’ it wants," said Ma.

"Under these circumstances, both sides get what they want and coexist peacefully," he said. "The consensus is simple design.”

Ma said it does not make sense to him why the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is against the ‘92 Consensus’. He also accused the DPP of sticking to its political ideology and shying away from telling the truth to the public.
